School Life

The school year starts in mid February and ends in the first week of December and is divided into three terms. Examinations are held at the end of each term and the grades obtained in each subject are calculated at the end of year. These results will determine promotion to the next higher grade.

St. Mary’s school follows the state approved syllabus for education. The classes are divided into the Primary section and the Secondary section. The Primary section consists of classes from age’s three to ten with twenty to thirty students in each classroom. The Secondary section consists of classes from ages ten to eighteen with students varying from five to fifteen in each class.

The school starts with a loud sounding of the “gong” at 8.30am in the morning. The students in their peacock blue trousers/shirts, white shirt, stripped tie and maroon cardigans quickly line up in their class for morning assembly. After the morning prayers and announcements by the Principal the students go their classroom.

Various subjects are taught during the day and each period lasts for forty minutes. There is a short break for ten minutes in between the classes during the morning session and a one hour lunch break from 12.30 noon to 1.30pm in the afternoon. The classes end at 3.30pm in the afternoon.

Most students bring ‘Tiffin” or lunch boxes from home. Lunch consisting of rice and dal (lentil soup) is provided to students from three and six through a central government sponsored “Mid Day Meal Programme”. This programme is provided to village schools in poor areas.

A small basic science laboratory has been organised in the school from early 2008. The laboratory needs to be equipped and developed further.

A computer classroom was also created in 2007. The computer classroom consists of six computers for older students. This classroom is in urgent need of proper furnishings.

The school aims at all round development of the students. Various activities are organised within the academic year like sports, games, computer classes, music, classical dance, cultural activities etc. All the students are encouraged to participate in competitions.

Every year the school organises an art and craft exhibition for the school. There are also competitions like essay writing, quiz, singing, dancing and drawing. Prizes are distributed for the winners to encourage them to develop their talents.
